Questions and Answers
Why are you advertising memberships?
At present, a number of inactive members have expressed a desire to leave the group, creating opportunities for new members to join.
Who are the Pukekohe Flying Group?
We are an incorporated society that operates a 1978 Cessna 172N from an airstrip located midway between Pukekohe township and Bombay. The Flying Group has been in existence since the early 1970s, having upgraded to the newer model around 7 years ago from a faithful old 172A.
Will I be able to get the airplane when I want it?
Membership is restricted to around 35 so as to keep the aeroplane utilization at such a level that members can enjoy reasonable access without having to book too much in advance. The great thing is that if you want to head away for a few days, providing there are no other bookings when you call, it’s yours without requirements to do lots of hours while you have it. If you just want to head over to the bach at Pauanui and park it on the lawn for a few days, feel free! The only ask is that consideration be given to other members. Obviously holiday seasons are busier than mid-winter, so parking it on your lawn for a week over Christmas may not make you many friends!
What's Pukekohe East like?
The Flying Group is based at Pukekohe East airstrip just east (as the name suggests) of Pukekohe. The strip is one-way, with takeoffs toward the west and landing toward the east. The strip is just under 600 metres long, which, coupled with a generous downslope for takeoff and upslope for landing, means more than adequate field length for takeoff and landing, even with reasonable loads. The aircraft is hangared and in-ground fuel facilities are available.
What does it cost?
The one-off joining fee is currently $2,000 + GST. You pay this only once, when you join the group. There is an annual contribution of $300 which covers fixed costs such as hangarage and insurance. Then, you fly the aircraft for $135 per hour (inc gst) which covers direct operating costs such as fuel, oil and maintenance. Only actual flight time is charged thanks to an airspeed activated hour meter, so there’s no charge for ground time. If you decide to leave the group, your joining fee will be refunded as soon as a new member can be found to replace you.
Is there a minimum experience requirement?
Yes, there is a minimum requirement of a PPL with 200 hours total time. A check flight and familiarisation with the strip with the clubs’ CFI is required before a new member can use the aircraft.
